What up, July? What up, the Man burns in 57 days? Have you started your playa preparations yet? You procrastinating? Yeaaaah you are.

Yes, people, it's time to start rooting through your storage, digging out those dusty tubs crammed with God-knows-what, figuring out what still works, what's deterioriated beyond recognition, what you need to replace, what you need to make and build and come up with, and ... how the hell are you gonna get all this done before YOU HAVE TO LEAVE FOR BURNING MAN?! Ahem. Feelin' it? Cool.

We've got our usual diverse assortment of posts for you in this edition of the JRS, from the sublime to the ridiculous, and everywhere in between. In coming editions, we'll start with our effort to help you prepare for the playa, giving you the information, tips, tricks, hints and suggestions you need to ready yourself for Burning Man. Each will be titled according to its topic, and they're as useful for veteran Burners as they are for first-timers ... we strongly recommend you make sure all your friends and campmates read them, along with the Survival Guide for 2011, which is coming soon. Please, PLEASE read it all carefully to maximize your preparation and enjoyment in Black Rock City!

And speaking of...we hope you'll be vocal and share what you learn with your friends and new acquaintances who are attending the event. Especially you longtimers -- we do what we can to document, share info, and communicate up front so everyone is prepared to participate (and thrive) in BRC -- but the best acculturation happens person to person. So adopt a newbie! Write a blog post of preparation tips! Tell someone a story! Make a video! Whatever you do, we hope you're taking part.

Hope everybody's summer is going wonderfully!

Giddyup!

REMEMBRANCE PLAQUE FOR NAMES OF BURNERS LOST - BY JULY 20

Since 1996, an anonymous Burner has created a plaque to commemorate members of our community who have passed away in the previous year. This tradition continues to honor those people who have impacted our Burning experiences and participated in making Burning Man happen. This is a call out to you, our community, to please let us know of any burners lost in the last year, who you feel should be added to this year's Remembrance Plaque. Please send only their name, exactly as you would like to see it appear, to this address:

remembrance@burningman.com (please DO NOT HIT REPLY to this JRS)

Submissions need to be received by July 20th to be included on this year's plaque. Submissions after the 20th will be added to next year's plaque.

Note: the plaque is not displayed in the Temple, where more elaborate and personal memorials are created by participants.
Look for the completed plaque at the base of the Man from Monday (August 29th) through Friday (September 2rd).

May their spirits move on to the eternal playa!

D.A.'S PLAYA RESTORATION QUICK TIP OF THE WEEK (#1) - MOOP-STICKS

D.A. writes:

"Hey gang! Keep Black Rock City beautiful! When picking up MOOP (Matter Out of Place) on the playa, make things funner and easier by using a MOOP-stick! Commonly known as a grabber or pick-up tool, the MOOP-stick quickly and easily allows MOOPers to grab MOOP off the ground without breaking their stride or having to bend down on their knees. MOOP-sticks make for a handy-dandy super-sexy playa accessory and you could also snag a full beer with it from a distance. Just sayin'.

http://moopmap.blogspot.com/2009/07/moop-stick-definition.html

See you on the playa!
D.A.
Playa Restoration Manager"

THE PAPA LEGBA CELLULAR SITUATION FOR BRC 2011

Note: this is a participate project, undertaken by members of the Papa Legba camp -- read up, it's interesting stuff. David Burgess writes:

"Once again, the geeks at Papa Legba camp will be running an experimental, non-commercial cellular network based on the OpenBTS software (openbts.org). Their network will support on-Playa text messaging and short phone calls. They support short calls to the default world, but will not route inbound calls, so if someone calls you on the Legba network it means that they must be calling you from the Playa.

Once again, Commnet Wireless will probably try to provide normal commercial cellular service under the AT&T and Verizon brands. What will be very different this year is that Papa Legba camp will be running their network in a band that is not normally used for cellular service in the US (the DCS-1800 band). This change in band will prevent user confusion of not knowing from moment to moment which network a phone is using, and it will improve the performance of the Legba network, but it will also require that people who want to use the Legba network use unlocked phones, probably quad-band.

Most cellphones sold in the US are locked and will remain slaves of the commercial network. So if you want to use a free, open, Burner-run, Playa-oriented cellular service, you will need an unlocked phone. (BTW, most phones sold outside the US are not locked and will work with the Papa Legba network as-is.) The details are given here:

http://papalegba2011.wikispaces.com/FAQ

Also, if you are VoIP/telecom software person interesting in developing SMS-, RRLP- or USSD-based interactive services for the Legba network, please contact David Burgess dburgess@jcis.net with 'Legba' in the subject line."

FREE PUBLIC RELATIONS SEMINAR FOR BURNING MAN ARTISTS

For several months, The Burning Man Media Team has been working to support Burning Man artists and BRAF grant recipients with Public Relations strategy and tasks. In many instances, we've worked with our local Regional Contacts to help reach out to their local artists and to assist us in offering PR support.

We invite YOU to join us for a Public Relations for Artists Seminar. Please join us online next Wednesday, July 13, at 6pm (Pacific time; 9pm Eastern time) for a special webcast! If you can't tune in at this time, fear not. We aim to post the video in our Media Gallery on BurningMan.com.

It's important to provide for good Public Relations when your art becomes real in the desert (or in your home town). Yet, many artists are so busy solving problems and managing their builds that they lose the chance to shine the light of visibility on their work and teams.

Live from Los Angeles, Athena Demos, one of our very own Los Angeles Regional Contacts, will moderate a panel of experts who know public relations and know the playa.

We will also have conversations with Burning Man managers and experts who can help you think through your strategy for pre-Burn promotions, on-playa efforts, and post-Burn communications to your team, your support base and the world.

Tune in by going to http://www.laburningman.com on Wednesday at 6 PM PST.

Or join us LIVE in LA at The Red Loft.
440 Seaton St, Los Angeles, CA 90013
Doors open at 5:30pm. Bring snacks to share.

You may want to be sure you have a second team member also watching, because you may want someone watching out for your PR opportunities while you lead your team.

This is a production of the Burning Man Media Team, the LA Burning Man community and the Chicago Burning Man Community.

This is a gift from all of us to you!

Thank you for all you are doing right now.

See you Wednesday.
Burning Man Media Team

GET GIFTED WITH LARRY HARVEY ON SHOUTING FIRE (and maybe even give a gift back…)

The Shouting Fire kids write:

"As you ready yourselves for Black Rock City, visit http://www.shoutingfire.com --where you can listen to Larry Harvey speak at the 2011 Regional Summit's Convectional Caucus. During the talk, Larry explored Burning Man's own rites of passage as both an organization and a community. And the crew from BMIR/Shouting Fire was there to record it for all the playa peeps who couldn't be in San Francisco.

While you're on the Shouting Fire site, consider donating to Shouting Fire's startsomegood fundraising campaign. Brought to you by the crew behind Burning Man Information Radio, Shouting Fire is a year-round, online radio project to connect you with your community the other 51 weeks of the year. Besides a scheme to bring you original programming that reflects the ethos and energy of BRC, Shouting Fire provides streaming services for the annual BMIR broadcast--and for live event coverage throughout the year. Maybe you've already contributed to your favorite playa project (or 12...) But for the price of a bottle of your favorite libation, you can help make Shouting Fire an ongoing reality. Because it takes a virtual village to raise some radio…and it really can't happen without you: a celebratory bunch of radical self-expressionists living in the middle of one of North America's harshest environments for seven days, thereby creating the single greatest people-produced miracle ever to grace the face of planet Earth."

VOLUNTEER WITH AIR PLAYA INFO AT THE RENO AIRPORT

Calling All Info Maniacs!

Do you like to help people, answer questions, and share information? Can't make it to the playa this year, but still want to participate somehow? Do you happen to have some free time before heading off to the burn from Reno and would like to volunteer? Would you like to greet and assist LOTS of super-excited and jazzed people coming to Black Rock City from all points around the globe!??!!

Air Playa Info returns for its fourth glorious year to the Reno-Tahoe International Airport, providing informative assistance to Burners on the last leg of their journey to the desert from Friday Aug. 26 through Friday Sept. 2. Three-hour shifts are available during Air PI's 9am-10pm operations, and parking will be validated for confirmed volunteers. And, just so you know, the general consensus of all Air PI volunteers is that the experience is enormously rewarding! If interested, please send an email to airplayainfo@burningman.com. And for further information regarding Air Playa Info, check out our page at http://bit.ly/iE9OW8.

GET YOUR DESIGN ON THE TEMPLE OF TRANSITION

Mark writes:

"Hi all, for those of you that share the passion for Burning Man there is a way for you to contribute to this years Temple and have your design on there. We are looking for 24 decorative panels to go on the outside of the 6 towers. Have a look at this link to get started:

http://temple2011.org/call-for-collaborative-artists/

Get your creative on people!"

CALL OUT TO BURNER INTERPRETERS

Love this. Cathy writes:

"Have any of you run across some of our fellow Burners on the playa who happen to be Deaf? Have you ever wondered how they can participate in workshops and tours without having anyone provide them access through sign language interpreters or captioning? Well guess no more.

This year my Playa buddy Inuendo and I (Squirt) are offering our services as professional sign language interpreters to Deaf Burners. If you are a sign language interpreter, please consider joining us in gifting this wonderful experience to our fellow Burners. As with all other benefits on the playa, this is an opportunity to gift your services and you can choose how much and when you wish to gift your time and talents.

If you are interested in interpreting with us or using interpreting services, please send your name and info to catiannaromani@yahoo.com. I will fill you in on our plans to work with Playa Info and make this experience viable at Burning Man for the first time. I think this year's theme 'Rights of Passage' is the perfect time to provide the opportunity for our Deaf community to more fully participate in the Burning Man experience."

PARTICIPATE IN THE 6TH BRC TRIATHLON!

While we think "look for the guy in the Speedos with the bullhorn" is a little too vague for the playa, this sounds fun. Dave writes:

"Sat Sept. 3rd; 1:00-2:30

Tired of looking at art and listening to your neighbor's Techno? Looking for a way to blow off some steam and gain a temporary sense of accomplishment? Ever wanted to do a Triathlon? Well then, join us for the 6th running of the BRC TRIATHLON! (I didn't make it to the the Playa in 2010. I was in a different desert last year thanks to the Bush Legacy). We will meet at 6 o'clock and Esplanade/Walkway to the Man (near Center Camp). Just look for the guy in the Speedos, with the bullhorn. Bring a bike and shoes that you can run in. We will start with a simulated "swim", followed by a bike ride around the Man. We will finish up with a short run. We will conduct races in groups of ten. Each race should only take about 15 minutes. After the race, replenish those depleted electrolytes with Gatorade and Everclear. Bumper Stickers and medals will be awarded to all participants. Hope to see you all there!"

Whether you are with another camp or looking for one to join, help us bring authentic (and inauthentic!!!) gumbo to Black Rock City and help make the Black Rock French Quarter THE culinary destination on the Playa!

Shrimp, okra, crab, sausage, celery, catfish, crawfish, onions, gator, lobster - it all goes in there one time or another, and the recipe changes with the ingredients. Bring something to share or something to throw into the pot under the direction of the gumbo chefs!

Soupfiends and stewmasters from around the globe - JOIN US and lend your talents to our everchanging savory delight! Help us shuck oysters and do a proper crawfish boil on playa!

WITCHES, PRIESTESSES, READERS, AND ESOTERICS!

Ignatius writes:

"Tarot and palm readings, candle magic, essential oils and infusions, talismans and other expressions of the mystical arts find their home behind our unassuming storefront in the Black Rock French Quarter. Join us in crafting spirit masks, and helping visitors to customize voodoo dolls with trinkets from the object of their desire or ire. Offerings of the sacred and the profane are encouraged to keep our little Botanica and Voodoo Shop stocked. Seek us where the chalice is held aloft and the sounds of blood and magic are heard - find us beneath the image of the Blessed Virgin cradling African Jesus in her six arms.

Whether you are already part of a camp or are looking for one, your first step is to join our discussion...

BELFAST FLAGS IN MEMORY OF THOMAS DEVLIN

Sanyu writes:

"Thomas Devlin was young man who was killed in 2005 (in Ireland). His family requested the creation of an arts event to give his death a positive legacy for the future. In 2009 The "Belfast Flags of Hope" project was conceived and implemented as one way of helping to dismantle sectarian attitudes; and of trying to create a cultural atmosphere that will help to facilitate a brighter future. There is a tradition of partisan flag flying in Northern Ireland that has always been highly contentious and divisive. The Belfast Flags project seeks to use this divisive format in a new inclusive and positive way.

PLEASE JOIN ME (Bebop) on the Playa to TAKE A PICTURE WITH THE BELFAST FLAGS. It is an international project and PEOPLE ARE ENCOURAGED TO TAKE PICTURES WITH THE BELFAST FLAGS EVERYWHERE IN THE WORLD...clearly the Playa is a place Belfast Flag Flying needs to happen! Wear your Burner Best and join us for a unifying photo! *Project Organizer: Raymond Watson; Playa Organizer: Bebop*

TIME & DATE: Wednesday August 31st - Saturday September 3rd: ALWAYS FROM 12:00PM to 12:30PM @ Center Camp

NEW ORLEANS BURNERS: THE NOLA CORE PROJECT NEEDS YOU!

Andrew writes:

"It’s crunch time for Burning Man projects, and New Orleans’ contribution to the Circle of Regional Effigies is no exception. If you’re heading to the playa from the Pelican State, you really should be a part of this amazing effort. I mean, we’re building a 20’ voodoo doll with a temple, art gallery and museum at her feet! It will be part of a ring of 22 regional sculptures around the Man! Mama Nola (Louisiana’s first ever regional project) is gonna be awesome, and now we need all y’all to come together and make her shine. Check out the CORE projects here: http://www.burningman.com/installations/11_art_core.html

First off, we need to find you! Hit us up at nolacoreproject@gmail.com, and check us out on FaceCrack www.facebook.com/nolacore11. NOLA Burners are hard to track down, and we need to coordinate a cross-country caravan, early-arriving build crew and fire team.

Second, come out to our build days at the Lower 9th Ward Village (1001 Charbonnet) every Thursday 6-9 and Saturday noon-6ish. Swing a hammer, collect driftwood and lumber, Mama Nola needs your sweat! Here’s a wish list: http://bit.ly/izjPgm

Third, we need ART to fill the temple in Mama Nola’s skirts. Make stuff! Donate stuff! We’re having a gallery show June 20th. Check it out here (and tell your rich art-having relatives): http://on.fb.me/mGshdT

Come out to one of our events!
7/9, Noon: Slip-n-slide BBQ at St. Claude & Press!
7/16, 6-8 PM: Crab Boil at Bayou Bienvenue (Caffin & Florida)!
8/6, 7-11 PM: Mama Nola unveiling and sendoff party at the L9 Village!

Last but not least, throw us something, Mister! Though were using almost all salvaged materials, transportation and other expenses are real. We have a fancy Kickstarter page to make it easy: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/957735967/mamma-nola-new-orleans-core-project "

EXCHANGHIBITION BANK

Dadara writes from Amsterdam:

"Did you enjoy the journey and the burn of the Fools Ark at Burning Man 2002?
Did you interact with the Grey Men at Burning Man 2003 and maybe even burned one yourself?
Did you get harassed by the Department of Dreamland Security at Checkpoint Dreamyourtopia in 2008?

If you want to see Dutch artist Dadara return with a project from Amsterdam to Burning Man in 2011 now is your chance to help make it happen. Just as with immigration procedures in 2008 they are going to bring something from the Default World to the Playa again. Only this time it's money! Money at Burning Man?????? But is it really Money? Or are the banknotes with denomination Zero, One Million, and Infinite Art? The Playa presents an excellent ground to begin rethinking values. During that moneyless week in the desert the Exchanghibition Bank and its bankers will confront the participants and turn every transaction into an interaction, questioning the values of Art and Money, with a hopefully lasting impact in the Default World as well: Are you willing to sign the 'Spiritual-Karma-Laundering-Contract' in order to get rich? ????

Fundraising Campaign: http://www.indiegogo.com/Exchanghibition-Bank-at-Burning-Man

The very first Infinite Banknote was officially presented to Larry Harvey mid-June in the Magna Plaza Shopping Center in Amsterdam (pics: http://blog.artasmoney.com/?p=240173 ), but now everybody will get the chance to become a Millionaire or own an Infinite Amount of Money........."

BM2010 PHOTO GALLERY FROM TODD GARDINER

Todd writes:

"I wanted to share my newly posted galleries of Burning Man 2010 photos. I have a wonderful collection of the people of Burning Man and another of the landscapes/art. This set also includes photos from the Seattle-area events, Critical Massive and SeaCompression, although those are in their own separate galleries. I spent a lot of time with the lunatics at Gate and with the villains of Gigsville, but there are photos of people and events from all over the playa. Of additional interest are the wedding photos I took of my (new) friends Jim and Shoko, which shows how keenly love overflows from our hearts to spill on the landscape.
